The mother of an 11-year-old who suffered a broken leg and facial injuries in a hit-and-run crash has urged the driver to come forward.

Ryan Kneale was thrown into the air when he was struck by the silver car in Darlington at about 17:15 GMT on Monday.

The driver slowed down but failed to stop, police said.

His mother Kirsty Whithouse-Kneale said he had been "so brave" and she appealed for the driver to come forward.

Ryan was crossing Whinbush Way near the junction with Sparrow Hall Drive when he was hit, police said.

PC Steve Graham, of Durham Constabulary, said: "This is a really serious incident and quite frankly Ryan could have come off far worse.

"I am sure this incident will be weighing heavily on the mind of the driver and I would urge them to clear their conscience and contact us."
