Darlington man killed in Scotch Corner A1 crash was inspecting car

A Darlington man was struck and killed on the A1(M) after he stopped to inspect his car, police said.

North Yorkshire Police said Robert Arthur Henry, 72, had stopped his red Ford Focus partly on the verge near Scotch Corner after smoke began coming from the vehicle.

As he got out of the car he was struck and killed by a Nissan Qashqai.

The accident happened at about 07:40 GMT on Boxing Day. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw Mr Henry's car before the crash.
