A man has been jailed for life for the murder of a man whose body was found in woodland close to the A1 motorway near Darlington.

Alan Youngson, 25, went missing from his home in Darlington on 15 September and was discovered on 7 October. He died of head injuries, police said.

Daniel Dodsworth, 29, of Branksome Green, was found guilty of murder following a six-day trial.

He was sentenced to life with a minimum of 17 years at Teesside Crown Court.

Following the verdict, Det Ch Insp Neil Edgar of Durham Police, said: "For the past eight months he [Dodsworth] has lied to both the police and the court in an attempt to hide the truth.

"The jury today, in reaching their verdict of murder, have seen through Dodsworth's lies.

"Alan's family have been devastated by their loss and I sincerely hope that today's verdict will provide them with some comfort and with the platform they need to begin to move forward with their lives."
