Burglars believed to have abandoned their dog during a shop raid in Sunderland are being hunted by police.

The small mid-brown animal was discovered in the Print Centre shop in the early hours, and was taken to a kennels for safe-keeping.

A laptop was taken during the break-in, which involved the raiders smashing glass in the front door to gain entry.

A Northumbria police spokesperson said: "We believe the dog may have been left by the people who broke in."

He appealed for anyone with any information about the raid to contact the force.
