A man who had his penis severed in an attack on Teesside has been "assisting" officers attempting to establish how he came about his injuries.

The 40-year-old, who has not been named, remains in a stable condition in hospital after being found on the A66 in Middlesbrough early on 13 March.

After coming out of an induced coma, he was "too distressed" to speak to detectives until after the weekend.

A 22-year-old man arrested over the attack remains on bail.

Cleveland Police has appealed for any witnesses who have not come forward to do so.

A spokeswoman said: "Specially trained officers have visited the man on a number of occasions since his admittance to hospital and have spoken to him about his injuries and how he has come about them.

"He is engaging with these officers and is assisting them as he continues to undergo treatment and begin recovery."
