The family of a three-year-old knocked down and killed by a car in Darlington have paid tribute to their "beautiful, loving and caring little boy".

Danny Wake, from the Lascelles Park area of the town, was hit on Monday while walking with his mother, brother and another child on Neasham Road.

His family said he was "always laughing with a cheeky little smile".

A 24-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released without charge.

'Very special boy'

In a statement, Danny's family said the boy was "adored by his little brother Georgie".

"We just can't find words to describe how much our very special boy will be missed by all of the family," they said.

Durham Police have renewed an appeal for witnesses to the crash, which happened at 10:35 GMT.

Supt Kevin Weir said it was a "tragic incident".
