Polls close in Middlesbrough elected mayor referendum

Polls to decide whether to keep a directly-elected mayor have closed in Middlesbrough, with the results expected early on Friday.

People were asked if they wanted to continue with the system, which has been in place since 2002, or switch to an elected leader and executive.

Middlesbrough Council said if the change was approved the current mayor, Ray Mallon, would retire in May 2015.

Mr Mallon has already said he does not intend to stand for re-election.
