A motorcyclist died in a collision with a car and a van in County Durham.

Durham Police said John Armstrong died in hospital after the crash on Sunday afternoon on Linden Road, Ferryhill.

A spokesman said the motorbike collided with the side of a car, which was on the other side of the road, and then collided with a nearby parked van.

The family of the 61-year-old father-of-two, from Westcott Terrace in Ferryhill, said they had been left "numb" by his loss.

Mr Armstrong, a glazier with a Bishop Auckland company, was married with a son and daughter and two grandchildren

A statement from the family said: "We have been left devastated by John's tragic death on Sunday.

"He was a keen biker of many years experience and was on his way home after a ride out with a friend.

"He was a wonderful family man and we have been left shocked and numb by his loss."

A post-mortem examination is due to take place later.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash.
