Arrest after Shetland pony's head found in Spennymoor

A man has been arrested after the severed head of a Shetland pony was found dumped in County Durham.

Six-year-old Trigger was reported stolen from an allotment area in Spennymoor, on 9 November.

A week later, the owner discovered its severed head a short walk away. The body was then found in woodland between Spennymoor and Ferryhill.

The 58-year-old arrested on suspicion of theft and animal cruelty was later bailed pending further inquiries.

A force spokesman said: "Trigger's owner is relieved that the rest of his body has now been found but she remains extremely distressed about what happened."
