Security call after graveside thefts in Hartlepool

Extra security measures are being considered for a Hartlepool cemetery which has seen a number of thefts of graveside memorials.

Among the options being considered for the town's Stranton Cemetery are fixed CCTV cameras and more police patrols.

Hartlepool Council, which owns the site, said the planned measures followed a petition signed by more than 2,500 people calling for action.

A public meeting is likely to be held to discuss the issue further.

A council spokesman said: "The petition calling for action has received unanimous backing from councillors.

"As a result, a special group of council officers and representatives of partner agencies, including the police, was set up to explore the options for improving security at the cemetery."
