Transport cards to aid vulnerable in County Durham

A new travel card has been introduced to help drivers identify people who may need extra assistance on public transport in County Durham.

This might be counting out money, remembering to get off at the right stop or getting properly seated.

The Bridge Card was launched on Friday by the county council in partnership with local bus operators and disability agencies.

The card has been hailed as a "simple idea" which could "prove invaluable".

Councillor Neil Foster, Durham County Council cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, said: "This is a really simple idea that should prove invaluable in giving people greater independence.

"Bridge Cards can be used by anyone who lacks confidence or is worried about using public transport for whatever reason, whether it's illness, disability or age."
