Pet cat 'savagely' killed by youths on Teesside

A cat, belonging to a five-year-old Teesside girl, has been killed by a group of youths and a dog in a "savage attack", police have said.

It happened at 0030 BST on Friday after a group of men were seen walking a black Staffordshire bull terrier along St Bees Walk, Hartlepool.

Police have said the men provoked the dog into attacking the tabby cat, which was a family pet.

A man was seen stamping on the cat's head, which caused fatal injuries.

The family were said to be "distraught".
