Fire crews tackle Polegate waste facility blaze
A blaze at a waste facility has been tackled by firefighters.
Crews were called to PJ Skips on the northbound A22 in Polegate shortly before 20:20 BST on Monday.
At its height, eight appliances were in attendance. Fire crews are due to remain at the scene throughout the day damping down.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue said the cause of the fire was not believed to be suspicious and appeared to have spread from a piece of machinery.
Residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut.
Incident commander Tony McCord said fire officers were separating and removing rubbish and rubble on fire and carrying out a controlled burn on some of the timber.
"This will take a considerable time... we expect to be here for most of the day," he said.
Nick Ellwood, managing director at PJ Skips, said it had been "quite an intense blaze".
"The fire brigade did an absolutely magnificent job in controlling the fire. They actually saved our offices and the infrastructure of the company," he said.
