A man and a woman have died in a hit-and-run crash in East Sussex.

Sussex Police said the car they were in was pulling out of a junction in Eastbourne when it was in a collision with another vehicle.

A 48-year-old Eastbourne woman was driving the car and her passenger was a 46-year-old man from Uckfield.

Officers said a man ran away from the scene in Bolsover Road on Friday night. Police arrested a suspect in Grand Parade.

The 23-year-old, from Eastbourne, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop after a collision.

He remained in police custody on Saturday.

Two other cars parked nearby were shunted in the incident at about 21:30 BST, police said.

The two people who died have not yet been named, but police said their families had been informed.

Witnesses have been asked to contact the force.
