Third arrest in Brighton CCTV hit-and-run accident

A third person has been arrested in connection with an accident in which a man was struck and thrown into the air in a hit-and-run crash in Brighton.

Andy Payne, 53, suffered serious head injuries when he was hit by a Fiat 500 in Montague Place on 14 January.

Police were hunting for a man seen at a convenience shop in Donald Hall Road, about an hour after accident in Kemptown, buying lighter fluid.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested and bailed until 3 April.

He was arrested on suspicion of arson, perverting the course of justice and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Graphic CCTV footage of the moment a man was struck and thrown into the air was released by police in a bid to find witnesses.

In the video, Mr Payne is thrown several feet into the air by the impact. He then lies motionless on the ground as passers-by come to his aid.

He was later released from hospital to continue his recovery at home.

A 31-year-old man from Brighton has also been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, driving without a licence or insurance and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

A 56-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Both have also been bailed until 3 April.
