Two people in 70s dead in Chidham bungalow fire

Two people in their 70s have died in a "severe" fire which destroyed a bungalow.

The blaze, in Chidham, near Chichester, was reported at 08:35 GMT, West Sussex Fire and Rescue said.

Crews arrived in Maybush Drive to find the property "well alight" with a "severe" fire at the rear of the bungalow.

Sussex Police said it is investigating the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as unexplained.

Two casualties, believed to be the occupants of the house, were found by search crews wearing breathing apparatus. Both were confirmed dead at the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Ashcroft from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime team said: "Two people, believed to be the occupants of the house... have sadly died.

"An investigation is underway to how the fire started."

Sussex Police initially said the couple who died were aged in their 90s.
