A driver who crashed his sports car and died minutes after making off from Sussex Police has been named.

Alex Inglis was stopped by a police patrol in Devonshire Place, Eastbourne, on Monday but drove away in his BMW convertible as an officer approached.

The 31-year-old, who lived in Summerdown Road, crashed in Paradise Drive several minutes later.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed and said it was considering the circumstances.

Sussex Police's professional standards department is also investigating.

Police said the car was not pursued after it made off, and was not seen again until an area search revealed it had crashed.

Emergency teams tried to revive Mr Inglis, who was the only person in the BMW 650i, but he died at the scene, police said.

Anyone who saw what happened is urged to contact the force.
