A rush-hour bus that had dropped off its final passengers caught fire outside Brighton's famous Royal Pavilion.

Smoke was detected shortly before the blaze took hold, the company which runs the bus said.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, which was called at about 07:00 BST, said the cause was accidental.

Martin Harris, managing director of Brighton and Hove Buses, said bus fires were "extremely rare".

He said: "The important thing to stress is that... our driver acted extremely professionally."

"We've now secured the vehicle... and we'll have a full investigation."

A fire service spokeswoman said crews left the scene at 08:07.
