Cocaine with an estimated street value of more than £500,000 has been discovered at Gatwick Airport hidden within rope used to secure a pallet.

The pallet of imported food, which included yams and sweet potatoes, had arrived on a flight from Jamaica.

Border Force officials said it was a "sophisticated" bid to smuggle 28lb (13kg) of the Class A drug into the UK.

They added that they were working with the National Crime Agency to try to trace the gang responsible.
