IPCC informed after Hastings burglary suspect's bleed injury

The police watchdog has been informed after a burglary suspect began bleeding heavily while in custody.

The 42-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital.

Sussex Police said he was arrested on Tuesday after being seen in the gardens of properties in Grange Road, Hastings.

Officers were told he had a medical condition and he was assessed and declared fit for release by staff at Conquest Hospital at about 06:00 GMT.

The man, of no fixed address, was then taken to Hastings police station to be questioned.

He later began bleeding heavily as he was being taken to a cell, a Sussex Police spokesman said.

He was taken back to the Conquest Hospital, where he is in a critical but stable condition.

The force's professional standards department is looking into how the man began bleeding and the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
