Firefighters spent eight hours tackling a blaze following an explosion at a house in West Sussex.

Four crews were called to the three-storey property in Fitzalan Road at about 00.45 BST on Monday.

They extinguished the fire at the rear of the house, which is now said to be unstable.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said there had been an explosion at the property and an investigation into the cause of the fire had started.

A spokeswoman said some nearby residents were advised to leave their homes initially but had now returned.

No-one is believed to have been injured in the blaze.
