Brighton Gay Men's Chorus: EastEnders' June Brown is patron

Veteran EastEnders actress June Brown has been appointed the first patron of Brighton Gay Men's Chorus.

The 85-year-old soap star, who plays chain-smoking Dot Branning, performed with the group at a Christmas concert at the Brighton Dome last year.

She wrote to the chairman of the chorus to accept the role.

Adam Betteridge, a trustee for the chorus, said last year's show raised £5,000 for the Sussex Beacon, a charity for people living with HIV.

"June Brown helped increase our visibility, as we had only registered as a charity the year before," he said.

The chorus has also raised more than £10,000 for other local charitable causes, including the Brighton and Hove LGTB Switchboard, the Shine Theatre Trust, and the Rainbow Fund.
