University of Sussex sexual assault claimant arrested

A 17-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of wasting police time over a report of sexual assault at the University of Sussex.

It follows an investigation into the incident, said to have taken place on the Falmer campus on 15 February.

Sussex Police said the girl, from Brighton, had been released on bail until 19 April, pending inquiries.

Last week, police closed the case into a second alleged sexual assault at the university, reported on 21 February.

Det Insp Mick Jones said allegations of sexual assault were taken extremely seriously.

"All reported offences are subject to a thorough and professional investigation with an emphasis on supporting the victim and gathering all available evidence to bring offenders to justice," he said.

"As a result of taking this thorough approach detectives investigating the two allegations of sexual assault at the University of Sussex have established that the incidents did not take place in the manner alleged."
