Woman raped on way home from Brighton nightclub

A 24-year-old woman has been raped as she walked home from a nightclub in Brighton.

Sussex Police said the victim was attacked in St James Street at about 01.30 GMT on Wednesday.

Her attacker, a man aged between 25 and 35, tried to talk to her before he grabbed her and pulled her into the New Steine community gardens.

He was described as being tanned and having jet black spiky hair. He was also said to be wearing dark clothing.

'Severely traumatised'

Extra patrols are being carried out in the area.

Det Insp Ian Still: "The victim, who was severely traumatised by what happened, is being supported by specially trained officers.

"We are making intensive inquiries, and all our officers are being briefed and are carrying out high-visibility patrols in the area.

"This appears to be an isolated incident which at this stage we are not linking with any other previous offences."

He added: "We would like to hear from anyone who was in the St James Street area in the early hours of Wednesday morning and who may have seen this man.

"Someone might also have seen the couple together without realising what was really happening."
