Man held over attempted murder of teenager in Lindfield

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of a 16-year-old girl in West Sussex.

The victim was found at a house in the High Street, Lindfield, with serious stab wounds to her face and body at about 03:20 BST on Thursday.

The man, from Haywards Heath, was found in a nearby recreation ground with injuries to his wrists and fingers.

Both the victim and the man, who police said were known to each other, were taken to hospital and later released.

Sussex Police said the incident had been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission due to recent police contact with the suspect and the victim.

A police spokesman said: "This is standard practice whenever there has been recent police contact with anyone involved in a subsequent incident."
