A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 42-year-old woman died at the scene of a fire.

Sussex Police said emergency services were called to the fire in Sackville Road, Bexhill, at 0023 BST on Monday.

Paramedics were unable to save the woman, who was found by firefighters inside a flat at the property.

A man managed to escape from the flat and was taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. He was later released and taken into police custody.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, which is thought to be suspicious.

'Lot of smoke'

Det Ch Insp Nick May, of Sussex Police, said: "There was significant fire and smoke damage throughout the flat and we are not currently in a position to conclusively state how and where the fire broke out."

Neighbour Heather Campbell said crews brought the fire under control quickly.

She said: "There was a lot of smoke and it was pretty scary."

A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters rescued the woman from inside the building.

"Sadly, however, ambulance crews were unable to save her."

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on Tuesday.
