A 21-year-old man arrested after a woman was found with life-threatening injuries on a railway line in East Sussex has been freed on bail.

The woman, aged 25, is in the Conquest Hospital with serious head injuries after being found lying on tracks near Hastings at about 0355 GMT on Sunday.

Sussex Police said the man and woman were known to each other.

The man, who was arrested held on suspicion of assault, has been bailed until 24 March.

He was arrested shortly after the woman was found. Both are from the local area, police said.

The railway line was closed in both directions between West St Leonards and Ore on Sunday while detectives and scenes of crime officers examined the scene.

It was re-opened just before midday.

Police have renewed their appeal for anyone who was in the area shortly before 0400 GMT and saw what happened to come forward.
