Former ice rink in Brighton 'to become hotel'

A disused ice rink in Brighton will be redeveloped into a hotel after the city council confirmed it had sold the property.

Officials said the development in Queen Square would help regenerate the area of the city north of the Clock Tower.

The ice rink closed eight years ago. In February 2009 the building was damaged in a suspected arson attack.

It has been bought by the Light Boutique ApartHotel chain, which runs a hotel in Manchester city centre.

Clive Lynton, a managing partner with the company, said he lived nearby and had a "special affection" for Brighton.

"We want to do something that we can all feel is right for the site and will be an asset," he said.

The company is expected to submit a planning application to Brighton and Hove City Council within six months.
