A four-year-old girl whose body was found after her mother fell to her death from East Sussex cliffs drowned, post-mortem tests have revealed.

Keira Madden was discovered at her home in Roundle Avenue, Felpham, on 3 July.

Sussex Police said the pathologist had concluded that the cause of her death was probably drowning.

The body of Cathy Madden, 40, was found at the bottom of the Seven Sisters cliffs, at Birling Gap, at about the same time as her daughter.

Toxicology tests on Keira's body also found traces of tiny marine organisms called diatoms.

A note apparently written by Mrs Madden said Keira had slipped and drowned in the sea on 2 July.

Sussex Police said the criminal investigation had now closed and evidence would be made available to the West Sussex coroner.

Det Ch Insp Nick Sloan said: "This has been a long and difficult investigation into the tragic death of a child and her mother.

"Although we will never know the full circumstances that led up to Keira's death, this development and the upcoming coroner's inquest will hopefully give Keira's family some answers on this very sad series of events."
