A man in his 30s has been taken to hospital following a gas explosion at a property in East Sussex.

Fire crews were called to the flat in Southmeads Close, Mayfield at 0057 GMT after a neighbour reported the blast.

The occupant of the flat was found unconscious with superficial burns in the kitchen of the ground-floor flat.

Station Commander Pup Upton said: "The blast was significant enough to blow the uPVC window clear from the wall and 8ft down the garden."

Fire crews, who had to gain access to the first-floor flat through the upstairs window, were at the scene until 0230 GMT.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the explosion was not known and was being investigated by Scenes of Crime and Fire Investigations officers.
