Four men who attempted to steal a cash machine from outside a store in Sussex were forced to flee empty-handed when it remained virtually intact.

The raiders, who were in two four-wheel drive vehicles, targeted the Iceland store in Blatchington Road, Hove, just before 0400 BST.

They attached a rope to the machine and tried to pull it out, ripping off the front but leaving the safe intact.

Both vehicles drove off, and it is believed they collided as they left.

One of the men was described as black, of medium build, and wearing a high-visibility silver jacket and black combat trousers.

A second man was believed to be white, thin build with a bald head, and wearing silver overalls with a hooded top.
