Scooter battery caused Haywards Heath Sainsbury's alert

A battery from a mobility scooter is believed to have been the cause of a security alert at a Sussex supermarket.

Shoppers and staff were evacuated from Sainsbury's in Haywards Heath on Saturday lunchtime after a suspicious device was reported.

Bomb disposal experts were called to deal with the item which was later believed to be a large battery, possibly from a scooter.

The store eventually reopened at about 1630 BST.

The suspected device was reported shortly before 1200 BST and the area was immediately cordoned off.

Police also closed Bannister Way between Harlands Road and Market Place for several hours.

The cordon caused traffic disruption in surrounding roads and traffic was queued up to Milton Road and Paddock Hall Road throughout the afternoon.
