Surrey Police alert as conmen scam woman out of £170,000

A woman has been tricked into handing over hundreds of thousands of pounds by men who pretended to be trading standards officers on the telephone.

Surrey Police said the woman, whose address has not been released, was led to believe she was owed compensation in relation to work that had been carried out on her driveway.

Officers said the conmen told her they were working with Scotland Yard.

Police said they then conned her into making payments totalling £170,000.

The Surrey force advised people always to check a caller's identity and telephone the company they say they are from to check they are genuine.

Anyone with concerns about a doorstep caller should tell friends or family or telephone the police, the force added.
