Man crushed to death by falling steel in Addlestone

An investigation has begun after a man was killed when five tonnes of steel fell from a crane and crushed him.

The steel wire mesh was being lifted from the lorry by a crane when the chain snapped and it fell from a height of 7ft, Surrey Fire and Rescue said.

Emergency services were called to a house in Wey Meadows, Addlestone, at 13:30 GMT.

The man, a construction worker, was declared dead at the scene. His body was recovered from under the steel.

The Health and Safety Executive is jointly investigating the death with Surrey Police but said it could not comment further at this time.
