The Guildford Cycle Festival has been opened by Paralympic gold medallist Rachel Morris.

Morris, who is from Guildford and won the time trial gold in the Beijing games, will be presenting prizes in Stoke Park.

Surrey hosted Olympic cycling last year, and also Ride London-Surrey this month, attracting 20,000 participants.

This September, the penultimate stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race will be held again in the county.

Surrey County Council said Sunday's festival had been prompted by the success of last year's event.

The event includes guided bike rides, demonstrations, a display by a mountain bike stunt team and advice and tips from experts on road safety and looking after a bike.

The council has also urged cyclists in the county to sign up for next year's RideLondon-Surrey before the ballot closes, which happens once 80,000 people have entered.

The ballot opened on Monday and 50,000 people had signed up by Thursday.
