A man has been arrested after a woman in her 20s was raped in a park by a man she is thought to have met during a night out.

Surrey Police said the woman was attacked at Whyteleafe recreational ground, Whyteleafe, Surrey, in the early hours of Saturday.

Officers believe she was assaulted by a man she met in Caterham earlier.

A spokeswoman for the Surrey Police said a 58-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of rape.

The force carried out house-to-house inquires in the Whyteleafe area following the attack.

The spokeswoman added: "Detectives in East Surrey have this afternoon (Sunday, 19 May) arrested a 58-year-old man on suspicion of rape after a woman in her mid-20s was assaulted on Whyteleafe Recreational Ground.

"The incident occurred during the early hours on Saturday, 18 May and officers continue to urge anyone who was in the area around the time it took place to contact them with information.

"It is believed the victim and the offender became acquainted with each other while socialising earlier in the evening."
