CQC report: Chertsey hospital records fit-for-purpose

A hospital's record-keeping has had a green light from inspectors after they raised concerns in a previous visit.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors had found that not all patient care records were kept up to date at St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey.

They found that some care plans relating to patients' specific needs, such as nutrition, were missing.

The NHS trust said inspectors returned in September and found patient records were accurate and fit-for-purpose.

Suzanne Rankin, chief nurse at Ashford and St Peter's NHS Foundation Trust, said nurses, therapists, doctors and clerical teams had put a huge amount of effort into putting the issue right.

She said: "This has included redrafting and simplifying a lot of our paperwork and making sure everyone is aware of their responsibilities."

'Charts left blank'

In a report published in July, the CQC said two patients had not had nutritional risks included in their care plan.

Another person had been identified as being at risk from falls but a falls care plan had not been completed so staff were not provided with guidance in preventing the patient from falling.

And fluid balance charts for another patient who was receiving intravenous fluids via a drip had not been filled in for four days, the CQC report said.

After a follow-up visit, the CQC said inspectors returned to the hospital and visited surgical and medical wards and looked at 36 care plans.

They found the records were accurate and fit-for-purpose and assessments, care plans and risk assessments had been fully completed.
