Free IVF treatment returns to Surrey after suspension

Free IVF treatment will be reinstated in Surrey after it was suspended a year ago to save money.

NHS Surrey has reversed the decision it made in November 2010 to defer new requests for the fertility treatment.

Following a review the board agreed to offer the treatment to couples from April 2012.

The health trust said it would be writing to everyone who had contacted it over the past year regarding IVF to update them on the decision.

A NHS Surrey spokeswoman said "after long and hard consideration" the policy will continue as it did prior to November 2010, with up to two free treatment cycles being offered.

"We know this means a further short wait for couples hoping to undergo treatment, however, we hope the board's decision will come as welcome news," she said.
