Police searching woods on the Goodwood estate in West Sussex for a missing 78-year-old woman have found a body.
The woman, who has not been named, was reported missing on Tuesday by close friends concerned that she had not been in touch for several days.
Specialist officers began searching the large area of woodland near Chichester at midday on Wednesday.
The woman's son, aged 50, was arrested on Wednesday morning on suspicion of murder.
Sussex Police said he remained in custody and would continue to be interviewed.
"It is too early to say yet whether this is the body of the woman we have been looking for, but early indications are that this is most likely," said Det Chief Insp Nick May.
"Officers have been working tirelessly at the scene to find the victim. We hope that the discovery this afternoon will help take the investigation further forward."
The arrested man lived with his mother in Chichester.
A post-mortem examination is to be carried out to establish the cause of death.
