Two 'brave' men grab gun from armed robbers in Ewell

Two men who witnessed an armed raid on a bookmakers in Surrey chased the offenders and managed to seize a revolver from them, police have said.

The pursuit happened after two suspects threatened staff and customers in Ewell High Street and stole cash.

Det Sgt Eddie Poole, of Surrey Police, said two "very brave" men chased the pair and managed to retrieve the gun, which is now being examined.

He said men were unhurt, but urged people not to tackle criminals.

He said: "Two very brave men gave chase after the suspects and managed to retrieve vital evidence from them which is currently undergoing forensic analysis.

"I would like to stress that I do not recommend members of the public tackle these type of criminals, as officers from Surrey Police are trained to a very high level in dealing with criminals safely."

The raid happened between 2015 and 2030 GMT on Wednesday.

'Terrifying ordeal'

One suspect demanded money and the other went to the tills where staff handed over cash, before the pair ran off.

Police have not said how many customers were in the shop at the time of the raid.

But Det Sgt Poole added: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the staff and public who were inside the bookmakers at the time."

The area was searched after the raid and house-to-house inquiries were carried out. Police are examining CCTV footage and are appealing for witnesses.
