Road improvements in Surrey reach million milestone

One million square metres worth of road resurfacing has been carried out across Surrey in less than a year, the county council has revealed.

It said it took highways crews nine months to reach the milestone, which it estimated was the equivalent of covering 140 Wembley football pitches.

Laid end to end, the length of road repaired and resurfaced in that period would stretch 117 miles (188km).

Councillor Ian Lake said crews had been "working tirelessly" to make repairs.

Almost 500 road projects, ranging from resurfacing to major structural work, will have been completed by the end of the 2010/11 financial year in March.

Mr Lake said severe weather during the past two winters had caused a lot of damage.
