Man charged over theft from Lingfield war memorial

A man has been charged in connection with theft of commemorative brass plaques from a Surrey war memorial.

Six plaques honouring war heroes were removed from the memorial in Lingfield High Street on the night of 14 October.

Three were found in Gun Pit Road car park and the others were offered for sale to a nearby scrap yard.

Surrey Police said a 24-year-old, accused of handling stolen goods, was due to appear at East Surrey Magistrates' Court in December.

All six brass plaques have now been returned to Lingfield Parish Council.
