Future of Walton Playhouse to be considered

The future of a theatre in Surrey is to be considered at a council meeting after a report on options available.

A number of issues and necessary improvements to bring Walton Playhouse up to standard were identified in a condition and structural survey.

It recommended a refurbishment programme to enhance the appearance of the building and improve facilities.

Subject to approval, it would include a new roof and improved dressing rooms, bar, foyer and ticket office.

'Years of uncertainty'

Elmbridge Borough Council's cabinet will consider the report on the future of the playhouse at a meeting on 24 November.

Councillor Jan Fuller, portfolio holder for leisure and cultural services, said: "After so many years of uncertainty, I am delighted that with this proposal we can now look to the future with confidence.

"The Walton Playhouse, with its film heritage and numerous theatrical productions, has been at the heart of the community for many generations and is a wonderful asset for Elmbridge residents.

"I believe that the much needed proposed refurbishment programme will do justice to this much loved community venue."
