Epsom fatal house fire not treated as suspicious

A house fire in which an elderly woman died is not believed to have been started deliberately, police have said.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire at Bracken Cottage in Bracken Path, Epsom, at 1100 GMT on Saturday.

A woman, who is believed to have lived alone, was led from the property. Paramedics tried to resuscitate her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surrey Police said it was not being treated as suspicious at this stage.

About 20 firefighters tackled the blaze, which damaged up to 80% of the ground floor of the property.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said a man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
