Powers to curb problem drinking in a Surrey town centre may be extended.

Guildford Borough Council wants to give police more powers to stop people drinking if their behaviour is causing problems.

It said while the existing order introduced in 2007 has been successful, it should be expanded to include the whole of the town centre.

The council is consulting on proposals to expand the order, known as a designated public place order.

Cllr David Wright, the lead councillor for community safety, said it would make enforcement "clearer and simpler to administer".
