Surrey street lighting scheme wins national award

A street light replacement scheme that will save Surrey County Council £12m has won a national award.

It won the best public procurement category in the CIPS Supply Management Awards, and will see 89,000 street lights replaced or upgraded.

The current orange lamps are being replaced with brighter white lights linked to a dimmer switch.

The lights can be controlled from Guildford and can be dimmed in different areas and at dawn and dusk.

Cabinet member for change and efficiency Tim Hall said the scheme demonstrated its commitment "to providing the best value for money".
