A Surrey council is piloting a car-sharing scheme using electric cars.

Environment officers at Elmbridge Council will share two Citroen electric pool cars for the next two years.

They will be used by officers dealing with everyday problems such as litter and for visiting homes that report problems with bin collections.

If the vehicles are found to cut pollution and travel costs, they will be rolled out to other council departments.

Environment councillor Glenn Dearlove said: "In a borough where car ownership and congestion are both really high, it's important the potential benefits offered by electric cars are considered by local employers and residents."
