Ipswich waterfront biker death crash referred to IPCC
The death of a biker who crashed through glass on Ipswich waterfront has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Rhys Lungley, 20, from the town, hit glass-panelled railings outside University Campus Suffolk (UCS) at about 02:50 BST on Saturday.
Suffolk Police said the matter had been referred to the commission due to the police presence in the area when the crash happened.
Officers are appealing for witnesses.
Police had received reports of a motorcycle travelling at speed through the town at 02:35.
Following the crash ambulance crews took Mr Lungley to Ipswich Hospital, where he died.
Floral tributes have been left at the railings, which have been boarded up.
His family, in a statement issued via Suffolk Police, said: "Rhys's bike was his freedom allowing him to explore life all over, enjoying it with his friends.
"He was an amazing young man loved by all and full of the joys of life.
"Animals were a big passion in Rhys's life and he had a lifelong ambition of going to Australia to see the wildlife there, something his sister and brothers wanted to fulfil for him."
