New £6.5m leisure centre planned for Beccles

A new £6.5m leisure centre is being planned for a Suffolk town.

The centre in Beccles would replace the existing sports complex on Ringsfield Road and feature a climbing wall, badminton courts and sprung floors.

The project is a partnership between local councils, private sector investors and the Sir John Lehman High School.

Head teacher Jeremy Rowe said: "It would bring first class sporting and leisure facilities for the first time."

Mr Rowe said he hoped the plans would go to consultation within the next few months.

"I'd say (the plans are) well advanced without being definite," he said.

"We're in that in-between stage but people are very confident. I think there's a very good chance we can deliver this to the town."

Mr Rowe said the finances would come from a "range of providers".

"We're working with a company called Pulse - it's a good business venture for them and they feel they can make a return on that investment long term," said Mr Rowe.

"The only way nowadays to bring this sort of project together is to work with private enterprise and local organisations and make these things happen."
