Suffolk man among Christchurch earthquake dead

An investment banker from Suffolk who had moved to New Zealand with his wife has been confirmed as among the dead in the earthquake in Christchurch.

Phil Coppeard, 41, from Bury St Edmunds, had been missing since the earthquake struck on 22 February.

In a statement, his family said: "He was a very generous spirit, always keen to be involved in the community and charity events.

"His death is a tragedy at the start of an exciting new life in New Zealand."

They added: "We take comfort in the support we've had from family and friends throughout the world - he touched so many lives."

Four Britons are thought to have died in the earthquake, but only Mr Coppeard and chef Gregory Tobin, 25, of Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, have had their details confirmed.

The death toll in Christchurch had reached 166 by Monday morning.
